I'm a biologist and a mother. Most of my research has been on insects and I find joy in noticing the small things. My favorite bugs are caddisflies.
When I was pregnant, every app told me my baby was the size of a lime, then an avocado, then a cantaloupe. As someone who spends her working life with critters, I kept thinking: my baby is an animal. Why are we comparing it to fruit?
So I made Fruitless Fetus. Each week pairs your baby's real measured size with a real animal of the same length or weight, and a little of the strange, wonderful biology that comes with it.
Fetal sizes come from published growth charts, so the match is honest, not just a cute comparison. Every animal is real, and every fact is checked. Hope you enjoy!

Fruitless Fetus (fruitlessfetus.com) is an independent project. This page explains what we collect, why, and what you can do about it. The short version: we collect only what we need to send you the right animal each week, and we never sell it.
When you sign up, we collect:
A due date is pregnancy-related information. We use it to work out which week's animal to send you, and we store a calculated end date so the weekly pregnancy emails stop after 42 weeks.
After week 42 we invite you to keep reading. If you choose a series for new parents, we treat your due date as your baby's approximate birthday so we can match emails to their age. If you choose a series that isn't age-based, or none, we delete your due date.
Our email provider also records whether you open our emails and which links you click. We use this in aggregate to see what readers enjoy.
Each processes data under its own privacy policy. We do not sell, rent or share your personal information with advertisers. Sponsors never receive your name, email or due date.
We may show sponsored messages to readers at particular stages of pregnancy. We choose who sees them; sponsors never receive your name, email or due date. Sponsored content is always labelled as sponsored.
This site does not set its own tracking or advertising cookies. Cloudflare may use strictly necessary cookies for security. If you click an affiliate link, the retailer may set a cookie to credit the referral; see our affiliate disclosure.
We keep your details while you are subscribed to any of our emails. If you unsubscribe, or finish the 42 weeks without choosing to continue, we delete your record within 12 months unless you ask us to delete it sooner.
If we change this policy, we will update the date above, and email you about any significant change.
